This presentation will introduce you to the new skills and will explain the reasons for the process of the revision, the changes themselves (including information on how to teach and evaluate your students on the new skills), and the forthcoming assessment.

Angela Whittaker, Renewable Technology Teacher, CTE, Cumberland“Sustainability and Renewable Technology” is being piloted in Cumberland County this year and will be offered statewide next fall. In this introductory course, students explore the social, environmental, and economic issues that are driving the “green” revolution in the workplace.

- Academic and Career Plans and Wizard 3.0

Joseph A. Wharff, Career Connections Specialist, CTE, Virginia Department of EducationThe largest coalition of educational agencies and services in Virginia history is supporting the continued development of the innovative Virginia Education Wizard with the goal of making the online college and career planning tool the primary college and career planning resource for every student in Virginia.
Wizard 3.0, launched on September 12, 2010, will allow students to create and store academic and career plans, as well as merge career pathways into those plans. School counselors and teachers also will be able to create Wizard reports about their students. The session will discuss the Academic and Career Plans and Wizard partnership and the implications for educators.

- Update of the Economic and Personal Finance Graduation Requirement

Sams, Business and Information Technology Specialist, CTE, Virginia Department of EducationThis session will give an update on the history, progress, resources, teacher training, and industry certification related to the Economics and Personal Finance Standards of Learning and graduation requirement approved by the Board of Education in January, 2010. It will also discuss the General Assembly delay of implementation and the planned 2011-2012 implementation. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions about implementation, resources, and requirements for teaching the courses that fulfill the graduation requirement.
- The Labor Market: How Are We Doing?

CTE’s mission is to prepare students for the real world of work. How can we do this, and how are we doing? This presentation will give an overview of current data on where the jobs are and how much education you need to find one, show you how to find the labor market data you need to plan and evaluate your programs, and explain the annual CTE follow-up of completers which shows that CTE students are successful at finding work and postsecondary education.
